Project Overview
Plainfield is a rapidly growing community in
one of the fastest growing counties in the country. This reality
reflects the fact, in a rapidly growing environment where congestion
is an increasing problem, alternative transportation systems
need to be considered. Studies being undertaken by Metra and
Pace to explore the feasibility of extending commuter rail and/or
bus service to the Village are current initiatives that will
affect Plainfield if they lead to new service implementation.
In anticipation of the new opportunities that these initiatives
would present, Plainfield is planning for a new transit center
that will serve residents and employees of the Village, while
providing new transit connections for the southwest suburbs.
It will open up opportunities for development and could act
as an economic stimulus for the Village. Careful planning will
ensure that the station area is well integrated into Plainfield's
fabric and the overall transportation system.
Study Area
The Study will be focused on two potential
sites.
Site One,
the near downtown site, is located north of Lockport Street,
east of Van Dyke Road and Wood Farm Road, south of 143rd Street,
and west of both the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Main Line and
Illinois River Line Branch. The study area includes the approximately
58 acres owned by the Village of Plainfield, as well as an approximately
one-half mile radius around the station site (Station Area).
This limit may be adjusted to include undeveloped property in
close proximity to this radius.
Site Two,
the I-55 site, is located east of U.S. Route 30, south of Renwick
Road and west of I-55 and contains approximately 120 acres of
undeveloped private property.
